Sailor and Traveler on the Open Sea

$850.00

48” x 36”

Acrylic on Canvas

Incudes satin UV protective varnish and wire hanger

The story of this painting is one of wild adventure as well as security of the skilled sailor moving us through the dynamic scene. The angle of the boat is intentionally on a diagonal to suggest active movement. The brushwork is loose and expressive rather than tight realism. Broken color and visible marks are used to suggest the texture of the sea and billowing sails. This painterly approach lends a sense of immediacy and life to the work. Rather than a flat backdrop of a blue sky, the visible brushwork of clouds extending beyond the canvas’ perimeter reinforce the feeling of wind, motion, and adventure. This overall mark-making approach is employed both for a sense of unity throughout the scene as well as a map for guiding the viewer’s eye to continuously move throughout, invoking in him/her an inner sense of adventure and expectation. Resting places for the eye occur in the anchoring focal point of the boat’s smooth, creamy-white, massive sails with visible borders, contrasting dynamic energy with a secured sense of calm.

This painting celebrates the adventurous thrill of sailing and the relationship between a skilled sailor and his passenger and the forces of nature. Despite the energetic waves, the boat rides high and steady—a subtle metaphor for perseverance and optimism.
